New USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400: High testing speed, high reproducibility

Outstanding improvements in yarn hairiness measurement are offered by a new testing and
classification instrument developed by Uster Technologies. The USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400
operates at speeds eight times faster than existing systems, with unrivalled levels of measuring
accuracy and repeatability.

Precise analysis of yarn hairiness is vital for many textile applications, as hairiness has a
significant influence on both the appearance and durability of fabrics, as well as impacting on the
productivity and efficiency of subsequent processing stages. Experience with textile fabrics has
shown that 15% of unacceptable fabric defects – such as pilling, for example – are caused by
high levels of hairiness or hairiness variations. The hairiness level is also an important parameter
in yarn profiles used as the basis for the buying and selling of yarns.

Uster Technologies, the world leader in high-technology quality measurement instrumentation,
already has a strong foundation in hairiness testing: the world-renowned USTER® TESTER
family, featuring the special OH module, has been acknowledged for the past 20 years as the
basis for the USTER® Hairiness H industry-standard value. Some 80% of the latest USTER®
TESTER 5 models are now equipped with this module, which serves as an early-warning system
for potential production problems.

Complementing this, and taking hairiness testing to new levels of performance, the USTER®
ZWEIGLE HL400 is the result of intensive development work by USTER® specialists. This
improvement was made since the acquisition in July last year of the product range of Zweigle, the
German maker of yarn testing instruments, which included the established Zweigle hairiness
testing system.

The most striking feature of the new USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400 is its speed. It operates at 400
m/min, compared to the 50 m/min throughput of the previous Zweigle system and today’s
competitive systems. Zweigle hairiness can now be measured at the same speed as the USTER®
TESTER 5, offering enormous benefits in productivity. This is combined with the precise
engineering and accuracy in measurement that typifies the USTER® product range.

Richard Furter, Head of Textile Technology at USTER® and an acknowledged industry expert in
quality testing, stated: “The hairiness characteristics of a finished product can be affected by
several individual factors, including yarn twist level, spindle speed and ring traveler wear, so
spinners need reliable information about the length and number of protruding fibers to allow them
to optimize both the performance of their spinning frames and the quality of the yarn being
produced. And today, as compact spinning technology becomes more popular with spinners,
measurement of both USTER® hairiness and Zweigle hairiness values is vital to allow spinners to
be in full control of the quality of the yarns they produce. The USTER® TESTER 5 with OH
module, along with the new USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400, is the only way to obtain the required
data. This latest instrument provides the vital S3 value – the number of fibers protruding by 3mm
or more – which is the main quality benchmark for a compact-spun yarn and an indicator of any
possible problems with a frame’s compacting performance.”

The USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400 provides highly-accurate measurement and classification of
hairiness, allowing in-depth yarn engineering and problem-solving at the initial manufacturing
stage. Together, the USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400 and the USTER® TESTER 5 with OH module
provide comprehensive and perfectly-integrated solutions for all hairiness testing requirements
and afford users with accurate and dependable results.

Celebration of 50th anniversary of USTER® Yarn Clearing
The current generation of USTER® QUANTUM 2 yarn clearers is a perfect example of USTER®’s policy of building on its past achievements while
constantly developing the technology needed by textile mills today and in the future. Two million USTER® QUANTUM 2 clearers have been sold to date, making it easily the best-selling yarn clearer ever. Following on from the celebration of 50 years USTER® STATISTICS in 2007, 60 years of evenness testing in 2008, 2010 USTER® celebrates the 50th anniversary of electronic yarn clearing. This was celebrated during ITMA Asia & CITME 2010 together with our customers and
partners who made a significant contribution to make our clearer the most successful clearer ever.

Successful Product Launch of USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400
The new USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400 hairiness length classification system was launched during the show, offering outstanding improvements in yarn testing. This product has been developed by USTER® specialists to reach new standards in measuring yarn hairiness, with the assurance of guaranteed precision and accurate operation that the USTER® name affords. Together, the USTER® ZWEIGLE HL400 and the USTER® TESTER 5 with OH module provide comprehensive and perfectly-integrated solutions for all hairiness testing requirements and offer users with accurate and dependable results.

Uster Technologies AG and Graf & Cie hold joint Seminar on Quality and Profitability

Uster Technologies AG and Graf & Cie held a joint seminar on quality and profitability for spinning mills on April 13th and 14th at the Rieter facilities in the city of Changzhou, China. The event, titled “Does Your Quality Management Drive Your Profitability” was attended by more than thirty executives from yarn spinning companies in the local area. Presentations were given on the topics of total quality management and the impact on profitability, best practices for wires and maintenance from the blow-room through carding, and the application of fiber testing for process control and cost management. Presentations were followed-up by an interactive case study workshop with all the seminar participants. The case focused on the interaction of key process quality parameters and the impact on cost. Concluding the seminar was a demonstration session in which the USTER® AFIS PRO 2, Graf Card Grinding, Wires and Maintenance practices were demonstrated. Attendees of this event left with new knowledge on how to improve their manufacturing cost through the application of a sound quality management program. Uster Technologies acquires Zweigle Products

Uster Technologies acquires Zweigle Products and strengthens its position in Laboratory Yarn Testing

Uster, Switzerland – May 18, 2009 – Uster Technologies Ltd, the leading high technology instrument manufacturer of products for quality measurement and certification for the textile industry, announced that it has acquired the product range of Zweigle to complement and strengthen its position as the world leader in yarn testing and certification. Zweigle, a producer of specialized yarn testing systems based in Reutlingen, Germany, recently filed for insolvency. Uster Technologies has acquired the technology and know-how for the complete range of Zweigle products as well as the right to use the Zweigle brand name. No other assets and no liabilities are included in the transaction which was finalized for an undisclosed amount. Three selected experts from the Zweigle organization will be working with Uster to ensure smooth integration. In 2007, Zweigle reported sales of approximately CHF 3.0 million. The acquisition of Zweigle’s product range strengthens Uster Technologies’ position as the worldwide leader and authority in yarn testing and certification. It also gives customers the advantage of a ‘one-stop shop’ for all their requirements in laboratory testing. In the future, USTER® STATISTICS based on data from Zweigle instruments will be provided to customers giving them further opportunities to optimize their product quality, control costs and improve their profitability. In addition, the strength of Uster Technologies’ distribution channels will give the opportunity to increase sales of Zweigle products.
