WHY LOW-VOLUME INSTRUMENT TESTING?

Success or failure in yarn production depends mainly on the quality, price and availability of raw cotton. The quality parameters must be checked to ensure a consistent quality in the yarn. The fact that raw material is by far the largest cost factor in the spinning mill should be reason enough to test incoming cotton bales – quickly, accurately and in reproducible form. For these reasons USTER® LVI Low-Volume Instruments are a cost-effective alternative for customers who only want to test specific cotton quality parameters.

  USTER® FIBROGRAPH 730 AND
USTER® FIBROSAMPLER 192

Monitoring the fiber length is essential to producing yarn that meets your quality needs. The USTER® FIBROGRAPH 730 measures properties of fiber samples taken from bales and card mat. Because interrelationships between fiber properties dictate that long cottons are also strong cottons, fiber length has a substantial impact on yarn evenness, yarn strength, and spinnability. The USTER® FIBROGRAPH 730 measures fiber length, length uniformity and short-fiber index.

The USTER® FIBROSAMPLER 192 is designed to prepare samples that ensure reliable and repeatable test results. This sampling technology is the same as that used by the USTER® HVI fiber testing system.

USTER® MICRONAIRE 775

The USTER® MICRONAIRE 775 is an instrument for the precise measurement of the micronaire of cotton fibers. Controlling the micronaire of every bale of cotton is essential to the homogeneity of the blends. Using the USTER® MICRONAIRE 775 to establish bale laydowns will eliminate or reduce costly rejects from fabric barré.

Low-micronaire fibers may also cause neps in yarn and fabric. If fibers are mature, they may be strong, truly fine and very desirable. If, however, they are not mature, they may be weak and ultimately undesirable, causing yarn- and fabric-dying problems. High-micronaire fibers limit the fineness of manufactured yarn.

USTER® COLOR/TRASH METER 760

The USTER® COLOR/TRASH METER 760 instrument measures the color and trash levels of a cotton sample. The sensor technology used in this instrument is the same as that used by the USTER® HVI.

The results can be used for evaluating incoming bales at the spinning mill or in the cotton gin. Spinning mills can use the instrument to determine if the color grade and leaf content meet the contract specifications. They can also use the results for further processing of the bales.

Cotton gins can use the USTER® COLOR/TRASH METER 760 to monitor and control the ginning process, ensuring that the target grades are met.

  USTER® NEP TESTER 720

The USTER® NEP TESTER 720, using the same technology as the USTER® AFIS, enables the mill to randomly check their incoming bales for neps generated by the gin. This information helps the mill to better select their cotton suppliers (gins) and also to select the right cotton for their end product.

In addition, the USTER® NEP TESTER 720 is the ideal tool to optimize downstream processes in spinning. The opening and blow room opens, cleans and mixes the cotton bales, and, at the same time, creates neps in the process. This nep increase in opening and cleaning cannot be avoided but it can be minimized.

By testing each card for nep counts regularly, quality levels can be established for the entire card room. Once established, it can be easily determined if the nep count of a specific card exceeds the upper quality limit, thus requiring maintenance work.

  USTER® FIBROGLOW 380

Within seconds, this easy-to-operate instrument provides information on fluorescence variations. The USTER® FIBROGLOW 380 is used by cotton spinners, merchants and ginners to determine the changing fluorescence properties of cotton fibers.

Fluorescence of cotton is a key factor affecting barré in grey fabric. Knowing the color grade is oftentimes not enough. Little correlation exists between any of the typically measured fiber properties and the intensity of fluorescence.

USTER® DATAMANAGER 740

The USTER® DATAMANAGER 740 is a flexible software package that integrates information from all of the low-volume instruments. The DATAMANAGER software is easily installed on a PC, allowing the customer to print reports and conduct sequence testing.

Benefits of the USTER® DATAMANAGER 740 include:

  • Reduction of operator error by giving a controlled sequence of testing.
  • Production of trend and/or statistical analysis.
  • Quick access to information.
  • Easy management of fiber testing laboratory procedures.

  USTER® STATISTICS
COMPLETE BENCHMARKING POSSIBLE

The USTER® STATISTICS are the only benchmarking tool available that allows the user to compare his process results with worldwide levels in spinning performance. USTER® STATISTICS are available for raw cotton, the carded and combed ring-spinning process, and the carded open-end-spinning process.

The results of an USTER® LVI can be directly compared to the USTER® STATISTICS. These instruments use the same measurement technology as the other USTER® fiber-testing products, USTER® HVI and USTER® AFIS.
